This week we learn about the fashion law movement ( it is a movement, people), why a bunch of designers went to Washington on Friday and why ugg is suing Roxette.

Fashion law, which takes up the lion’s share of this writer’s work day, definitely got its due this week. Top fashion lawyer Staci Riordan of Fox Rothschild LLP officially declared fashion law a “movement,” just six years after the very phrase “fashion law” drew laughter from her friends and colleagues. Meanwhile, legal industry blog Above The Law interviewed yours truly about what exactly “fashion law” is, and asked whether there’s “room for other lawyers in the fashion law space.” My response: fashion usually “cannot be the sole focus of one’s practice”; however, if this week is any indication, that may soon change.

Meanwhile, halfway across the world… A little bird (maybe an emu – those are Australian, right?) – tweeted that 80’s pop music duo Roxette’s effort to register its band name as a trademark for clothing has been opposed by… Ugg? It’s difficult to decide which is the more befuddling question: 1) (How) does Roxette still exist? 2) Why in the world (or at least the Southern Hemisphere) would UGG have a problem with the faded Swedish stars using their own group name in connection with apparel? UGG, just listen to your heart and let Roxette have its trademark.

uggs were supposed to be functional shoes, for romping around in the snow and staying warm when the heater breaks. Those functions, and those functions alone. The boots have become, however, a statement "It" item utilized for Fashion purposes probably more than functional purposes these days. You know an item like this is destined for continued success when chicks in hot, muggy towns like Austin, Texas, wear them year-round with denim skirts, like they’re flip-flops, to look sexy. You also know their success can’t be stifled when the company that owns them pulls in $813 million in revenue in a year, as the company that owns Uggs did in ‘09. And you know they’re here to stay when companies like Jimmy Choo start making embellished, fringed $600 versions of the things. The craze has swept the muggy city of Hong Kong, where important fancy department store Lane Crawford saw the boots sell out within a month last year.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

“I would say we were somewhat surprised at how intense the reaction was,” says Peter Nichols, senior buyer for Lane Crawford’s designer shoes department. “Clearly the consumer had been waiting for it.”

One look at these boots, though, raises the question of whether the fad will ever die. The thick, ungainly boots can cut off a woman’s legs in a most unflattering way — resembling two stuffed animals gnawing at the feet. Meanwhile the inner layer of fleece seems appropriate only for snowstorms, and hardly useful in the winters of Hong Kong, where temperatures rarely fall below 18 degrees Celsius.

Nichols adds that he believes "ugg Boots are here to stay," and that “Whether you love them or not, they are definitely a part of the footwear conscience." Has anyone considered that maybe, just maybe, the Jimmy Choo collaboration will kill their appeal?

UPPER WEST SIDE — Betsey Johnson’s SoHo store will serve cocktails and desserts until 11 p.m. for Fashion’s Night Out on Friday, but there’s no party at the store’s Columbus Avenue location.

The Upper West Side may be the new home of Fashion Week, but many of the neighborhood’s boutiques are skipping one of the week’s highlights, Fashion’s Night Out, when retailers stay open late and host parties for shoppers.

They say it doesn’t make sense to hold Fashion’s Night Out parties in a neighborhood that’s more family-friendly than fashion-forward.

"It’s not really bumpin’ at night," said Callie Eisenbrandt, assistant manager at Theory on Columbus Avenue and West 71st Street. "People are at home with their kids."

Theory’s Upper West Side location will stay open later than usual for Fashion’s Night Out, but the store’s real Fashion’s Night Out soiree will go down at its Meatpacking District location, where champagne will flow to a DJ’s beats, Eisenbrandt said.

The ugg store on Columbus Avenue and West 67th Street tried hosting a Fashion’s Night Out event last year, but it was so slow that the store decided against it this time around, said sales associate Chad Harris.

"(The Upper West Side) isn’t really a fashion destination," Harris said.

Instead Ugg is putting the fashion focus on its SoHo location, where the store will unveil a new alliance with shoe designer Jimmy Choo.

The Upper West Side may be the new home of Fashion Week, but stores like Theory aren’t planning big Fashion’s Night Out parties in the neighborhood. (DNAinfo/Leslie Albrecht)

Likewise, Kiehl’s Upper West Side store isn’t participating in Fashion’s Night Out, but in the East Village, its hosting karaoke and an appearance by singer Jordin Sparks.

Paige Denim’s Columbus Avenue location will serve champagne and cupcakes for Fashion’s Night Out, but designer Paige Adams-Geller won’t be making a personal appearance there. That’s only happening at the store’s SoHo and Meatpacking District’s locations.

"This is kind of the quieter neighborhood of our three stores, but our other locations are definitely having a good time (for Fashion’s Night Out)," said Paige Denim manager Adrienne Kupka. "On the Upper West Side you have more restaurants, more delis, other things going on, but downtown their focus is on fashion."

But the more neighborhoody feel has been a boon for Paige Denim, Kupka noted. While Paige’s downtown stores attract plenty of foot traffic from tourists, on the Upper West Side the store has been able to build a client base of repeat customers, Kupka said.

The high-end denim retailer has performed "surprisingly well" since opening in June on the Upper West Side, Kupka said. "I thought it would take a while for the neighborhood to warm up, but it hasn’t."

It is this season’s weapon. Do not for a moment undermine the heel’s potential to kill literally — they are sharp and long. However, just to be politically correct, I’m not trying to promote the shoe as a new killing device. Just doing an update on shoe trends. And saying very candidly that if it’s one Fashion item you plan to invest in this season, let it be the shoe.

Whether you are a high street shopper or a luxury brand addict, you will find the most irresistible variety this season. Nothing can do more for a woman’s self-esteem than a pair of stilettos. And nothing can lift a dress more than the right match in shoes.

Manolo Blahnik comes straight from shoe heaven. His new Anastasia inspired by Greece is ultra colourful and super cool. A plain black number with this shoe, as I said before, it is a silent weapon.

Flowers are big on shoes and sandals this season. Miu Miu has black patent leather mid-heel shoes with big metallic flowers on either side inspired by Mary Poppins. However over-the-top they may sound; they have an edgy feel to them. Valentino has pretty white sandals with monochromatic flowers. Have you seen Christian Louboutin’s over-the-knee boots with the trademark red sole? They may convey the promise of keeping your knee warm in cold subzero temperatures but I honestly thought they had a hookerish feel to them when I first saw them. But the salesgirl promises that they will grow on you.

These over-the-knee, long, long boots are a part of most collections this season, Jimmy Choo 24/7, Alaia, Giuseppe Zanotti to name a few. Alaia’s metallic gladiator sandals are a sure shot winner.

Peep-toe shoes are still big. Skin colour shoes, which give a sense of leg lengthening, are not going out of vogue in a hurry either. Simply because they do what they are supposed to — make a woman’s legs look long and glam. Super high heels, peep toe sandals, ballerina pumps, flats, very bling yet completely desirable.

However, Clogs are the one look I have never been able to appreciate. It is uncomfortable, impossible to walk with on cobbled streets and makes even the most gracious legs look boxy. Ask a man and he will tell you that pencil heels win over clogs or wedges hands down. If there is one shoe company which employs marketing geniuses, its ugg shoes. How on earth can a shoe be so ugly and sell so much? Incredible. Pick any location worldwide and you will see people waiting for hours outside the store for a pair of uggs. The positioning that ‘yes the shoe is ugly but ultra-comfortable’ has definitely touched a deep, aching chord in most consumers. My pursuit for the perfect pair of shoes is still on. Anyone with any answers?

All in a day’s work: Billie Piper shows off her stunning legs as she films scenes in south London for Secret Diary Of A Call Girl

Wearing heavy make-up which accentuated her plump lips, the mother-of-one squinted in the sunshine as she filmed the scenes in south London yesterday.

But hours of wearing high heels clearly took its toll and Miss Piper was later seen sporting ugg Boots but wearing the same dress.

Earlier in the week the actress was the picture of sophistication, despite her call girl character, when she pulled off a Parisian-inspired modern retro look.

She strutted around central London in the 1920s black silk wide leg pant suit, accompanied by a white vintage fur cape and heels.

Miss Piper was filming the fourth and final series of the hit ITV2 show, which is allegedly paying her a whopping £400,000 to play the high-class escort.

She was accessorised to perfection with a 1940s head piece that held back her slick hair bun, which was garnished with crystal embroidery.

Her crystal earrings hung delicately as she strolled around holding a modern patent red Mulberry satchel, which matched her classic red nails.

Despite her character’s controversial career, she definitely displays an elegant side to the escort business.
