People’s nutritional condition is closely related to their body shape, energy, psychology, reproductive capacity, quality of life, lifespan and illness. Reasonable nutrition originates from a reasonable diet that is a comprehensive, balanced and adequate diet, which will be the basic requirement for improved nutrition in the new century.
For the groups of people involved in different fitness, there are different characteristics in need of nutrition, which should be satisfied through higher dietary improvements.
Childhood is a period of strong growth and development, which involves more activities, higher calories consumed in basal metabolism and muscle activity, and higher standard of various nutrients. People are most concerned above the height of the next generation. It will be an important task in the 21st century to initiate dietary intervention in primary and secondary students.
People born in the early 20th century (1900) just hope to live to the average age of 45 years old of the contemporaries. However, today’s average life expectancy has increased to 68 years old, which will further raise to 73 years old in 2025. This means the number of people over the age of 65 will rise from the current 390 million to 800 million in 2025. How to improve fitness and quality of life of the older people remains an important issue in the ageing society, in which nutrition will also play a vital role. As reasonable nutrition stems from reasonable diet, in the 21st century, we advocate a comprehensive, balanced, adequate diet.
