abundance of newly minted millionaires in New York City, where more than 300 were rumored to reside, and with moneyed Gilded Age Americans storming the doors of its flagship Paris store on the Rue de la Paix, Cartier established a beachhead on Fifth Avenue in 1909. An astute businessman, Alfred Cartier exchanged $100 and a double strand of pearls — worth about $1 million at the time — for the Beaux Arts mansion occupied by the store to this day. In its own classy, expensive way, Cartier conquered America.

“Americans have always been important customers for Cartier,” exhibition curator Martin Chapman writes in his catalog essay. “By 1900, when the hugely successful Exposition Universelle drew fifty million visitors, Paris was confirmed as the luxury center of the world. Cartier was one of the destinations for Americans,” such as J.P. Morgan and other captains of industry with money to burn, “because it had a reputation for making the finest jewelry for the ruling elites.”

Marking Cartier’s 100th anniversary on these shores, the exhibition illustrates the long-standing, symbiotic link between celebrity and the cachet of luxury goods, those mutually beneficial relationship in which well-known clients and chic, high-end designers bask in each other’s reflected glory.

To that end, buyers or recipients of extravagant Cartier gifts, such as a sun-kissed Liz Taylor, who has had a much publicized obsession with precious stones, are in some instances pictured modeling their jewels, adjacent to the real thing on view in the Legion’s display cases. Tanned and at the height of her sensuous beauty, we see Taylor in a home movie, smiling radiantly beside a pool in Cap-Ferrat, France; her head tilted back, she shows off her exquisite ruby and diamond suite, a present from then-husband Mike Todd. Cartier never looked so good.

Larger baubles from future spouse Richard Burton would follow. He reportedly shelled out a cool $1 million for what became known as the Taylor-Burton diamond. A scrapbook details the public’s excitement over the romance.

A demure Princess Grace, in an official photograph, wears a necklace with three rows of diamonds alternating with baguettes, a tiara mounted with diamond and ruby brooches and the 10.47-carat diamond engagement ring she wore on the set of her last film, “High Society.” It’s a good thing she’s sitting down, though it’s said that Lady Granard, born Beatrice Mills in San Francisco, owned Cartier pieces so enormous she could barely walk under their weight. One of her heavy diamond and emerald necklaces greets visitors at the entrance to the exhibition.

With the exception of cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post’s emerald and diamond pendant shoulder brooch, considered the most outstanding piece Cartier ever made for an American, the Duchess of Windsor topped them all. Her iconic flamingo clip brooch, whose plumage is fashioned from caliber-cut emeralds, rubies and sapphires, was one of many gifts showered on the “woman he loved” by Britain’s King Edward VIII, who would soon abdicate his throne. (It’s said that he bought her a 19.77-carat emerald ring to celebrate her divorce.) The flamingo is on display for the first time in this show.

Highly adaptable and able to change with the times while maintaining exacting standards, Cartier may have done its most adventurous work in the service of fulfilling the fantasies of clients. A fully articulated, slithery serpent necklace with the feel of snakeskin was commissioned by Mexican film star Maria Felix. Made of platinum and white gold, it is as exotic and audacious as the woman who envisioned it. One glance at Felix’s photograph and there’s no doubt she had the flair to pull it off.

Cartier created another articulated necklace for Felix, this one reportedly modeled after a live baby crocodile supplied by the actress, who, as legend has it, took it with her to the Paris store. One section is made from 525 grams of gold and adorned with more than 1,000 yellow diamonds; the other is decorated with more than 1,000 circular cut emeralds; the two bejeweled reptilian snouts overlap at the jugular.

Arriving just in time for the holidays, the exhibition is, if not a guilty pleasure, certainly a vicarious one. It dazzles the eye and may provide gift ideas for that special someone — as long as money is no object. While money isn’t everything, it’s the only thing that buys you Cartier.

Runners can personalize the collection with name, time and the year to mark their marathon experience.

The collection is crafted with renowned Tiffany quality and includes a sterling silver bracelet and tag pendants, key ring, money clip, pen and pewter picture frame, along with crystal mugs, tumblers and an apple paperweight. Each item is etched with the official ING New York City Marathon logo.

Male and female runners who finish in first, second and third place in the open division and first place male and female finishers in the wheelchair division will receive the Samuel Rudin Trophy, which the Rudin family commissioned Tiffany to design and create in 1984. The trophy, a sterling silver tray featuring the course of the race highlighted in blue enamel on an etched map of the five boroughs, is handcrafted and hand engraved by master silversmiths in the company’s hollowware workshop in New Jersey.

Runners who finish in the top 10 and competitors in all categories will receive awards from Tiffany’s exclusive collection of crystal designs. The awards are etched with the inscription “ 40th Running” and the date, as well as NYRR and ING New York City Marathon logos. Categories include overall finishers, top age group finishers, top team finishers, top finishers from each of New York’s five boroughs, top wheelchair finishers and top handcycle finishers. There is also a crystal award for top NYRR volunteers, as well as top company foundation awards, the Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge award, the Gwendolyn Clark and the Abel R. Kiviat Memorial awards, and the Alberto Salazar honor for the first American male and female to finish the marathon.

In addition to the Rudin trophy, the first, second and third place finishers in the open division and first place male and female finishers in the wheelchair division will receive medals commissioned by the NYRR. The 18 karat gold vermeil, sterling silver and bronze medals, measuring ¼-inch thick and 3½ inches high, feature a raised motif of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the marathon’s starting point, encircled by the five boroughs that host the event: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx. On the reverse, the date and NYRR logo are framed by the well-known lyric, “ If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere, New York, New York.”

Scheduled for Sunday, November 1, the ING New York City Marathon is the premier event of New York Road Runners and one of the world’s great road races, with over 42,000 participants representing all 50 states and over 100 countries, as well as two million spectators and more than 300 million television viewers worldwide.

Like most women, I adore diamonds, precious gems, gold, and fine watches, but I’ve never been attached to any particular brand of jewelry. After all, when people look at a diamond ring, they’re more likely to admire the stone itself than to ask about the ring’s manufacturer.

Of course, I had heard about Cartier jewelry before, and have even observed a few pieces from their collection. I always thought that they would be too expensive for me. However, one day I was able to examine some Cartier jewelry up close and I was able to take a peek at the price tag.

I was surprised that even though the price was high, it certainly wasn’t extremely expensive. I mean, I wouldn’t have to file for bankruptcy to be able to buy the necklace or anything like that. As a result, I decided to buy that special necklace.

The necklace made me feel special every time I wear it. Like all Cartier jewelry, my necklace was luxurious, stylish, and elegant. I was very impressed by the sheer beauty and excellent craftsmanship of my necklace. Because I prefer to have variety in my jewelry, I own a bunch of necklaces.

But I find myself wearing my new necklace all the time. I wore it when I visit the church, at my workplace, on special occasions, and even when I go on informal occasions with my friends. After a few weeks, I wanted add a few more Cartier jewelry to my collection.
