BERLIN (Reuters Life!) – Burberry is planning to stick to its knitting in terms of branding but it is looking to expand leather goods, children’s wear and sportswear, the creative head of the British Fashion group said on Tuesday.

BERLIN (Reuters Life!) – Burberry is planning to stick to its knitting in terms of branding but it is looking to expand leather goods, children’s wear and sportswear, the creative head of the British Fashion group said on Tuesday.

Christopher Bailey, 38, who was elevated last week to the post of chief creative officer – a position nobody else holds in the fashion industry – said there was solid demand for new types of Burberry goods such as belts and shoes.

“There is a huge momentum in this sector (of leather goods),” Bailey told Reuters in an interview on the fringes of a luxury summit in Berlin, organized by the International Herald Tribune.

“We will be growing the range with a bigger emphasis on shoes,” he said.

Currently, non-apparel makes up about one-third of Burberry’s revenues. Bailey’s comments came after the 153-year-old company posted a smaller than expected fall in first-half profits.

Bailey said the crisis had goaded Burberry to continue cultivating its “integrity and quality values.” He said the company, which had already survived many twists and turns in history, carried a “reassuring” character.

“You need to understand your roots and your heritage,” he said. “Our strategy has been to be more focused about who we are. Our point of view is that you have to have a point of view and have a strong voice among the clutter.”

Bailey said he had noticed that “people feel it is okay to start shopping again” but they wanted to buy things that lasted.

Bailey, who received an MBE this year in the British Honours List for his services to the fashion industry, joined Burberry in 2001.

Prior to joining the British group, he was senior designer of womenswear at gucci in Milan from 1996 to 2001 and was the womenswear designer at Donna Karan from 1994 to 1996.

After fighting hard to shake off its unfortunate associations with ‘chav’ culture the firm has divided the country into three categories according to how smartly they want to dress.

The luxury Fashion house has introduced a new tripartite system, splitting glamour queens who opt for silk catwalk dresses from those more comfortable in scruffy jeans.

It was U.S. businesswoman Rose Marie Bravo who transformed the brand’s image when she joined the company in 1998, spearheading a renaissance that saw the likes of Kate Moss, Rachel Weisz and Emma Watson star in its advertising campaigns.

Mr Werner is not the first to have turned his home into a tribute to a fashion label.

Footballer Philip Neville turned his 18th century grade II-listed home into a Versace-themed palace after he bought it ten years ago.

The decor featured gold-panelled ceilings and monogrammed gates sparking widespread ridicule.

The property was on the market for a year before selling for £1.5million below its £4million asking price earlier this year.

Burberry, Britain’s once-staid Fashion house, can’t help it if Sarah Palin wears their trademark plaid scarves. “[T]he conspicuousness of the pattern also means that the company has little control over how it is seen, or on whom,” the New Yorker magazine observed, in reference to Palin. Minneapolis has the same problem: today the Mill City gets dragged into a lengthy New York Times recounting of Palin’s purchases at the downtown Neiman Marcus store last year during the Republican National Convention.

Of course, they weren’t really Palin’s purchases — and that’s another Minneapolis connection in the Times story. Jeff Larson, the locally-bred Republican consultant whose FLS Connect GOP phone-solicitation firm has been in the news again lately, fronted Palin the $130,000 for her clothes. (The Republican National Committee paid him back.)

The occasion for retelling the story of Palin’s Minneapolis shopping spree is her new book, in which Palin has her own version.

The Times interviews Lisa Kline, the designer who dressed Palin and the members of her family for the 2008 GOP convention. An excerpt:

Neiman Marcus opened for Ms. Kline and her assistant at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, she said, and the two split up and spent a rushed 90 minutes or so gathering what they needed. Ms. Palin and her family were not there; nor was anyone from the campaign. Instead, the two stylists relied on a couple of salesclerks and a store manager.

“There was no conversation. There was no chitchat. It was just, ‘We need two pairs of pants in size yadada,’ ” Ms. Kline said. The purchases were rung up, but Ms. Kline was not asked for payment of any kind.

“Apparently it had been prearranged,” she said. …

Ms. Kline said she does not recall who asked her to expand her styling to the entire Palin family or who set up the appointment at Neiman Marcus, which later became so controversial because it undermined the candidate’s image as a populist.

The Burberry brand that Palin favors has had a bad rap back in Britain as having become too populist:

During the 1970s, the brand became popular with the British football casual cult, leading to it to being associated with chavs, hooligans and members of football firms by the 1990s. The brand became something of a national joke, particularly when actress Danniella Westbrook was photographed with her young daughter wearing matching Burberry outfits. South Wales police ran a drive against anti-social behaviour under the name Operation Burberry and Burberry admitted that “Burberry is now synonymous with Chavs and thugs.”

Palin will make a return visit to Minnesota on her book tour, with a stop at the Mall of America on Dec. 7. (But don’t go there dressed like a chav in your Burberrys, or the security guards’ll be on you.)

Cut to the late-1990s and the images the print called to mind were not good. At one end of the spectrum were the Sloanes, who might tote a checked bag or brave the bracing King’s Road air with a scarf. At the other, were chav-tastic celebs who wore it head to toe, and enrobed their kids and dogs in it to boot. It seemed beyond redemption.

But now, thanks to the skywards-trajectory of the brand under the creative direction of Christopher Bailey, the Burberry check is no longer a sartorial crime. Cool young Londoners such as Alexa Chung started opting for the label’s vintage trenches as default outerwear, and the occasional flash of printed lining began to slowly insinuate itself back into the collective Fashion consciousness.

Which is probably why, after some serious soft-pedalling with the print in order to concentrate on a credible high-end mainline, the brand has chosen to again issue a few choice accessories that proudly and graphically sport their Burberry DNA. The pieces include a pair of canvas running shoes, an oversized snood and a pair of wellies, all of which can be found on the Style mavens’ internet shopping site of choice, Net-a-porter.com.

Of course, these remain pieces that require careful consideration before incorporating them into your wardrobe. Chucking any of them on with a tracksuit would be ill-advised in the extreme. But styled with a bit of laid-back, contemporary simplicity and a nod to old-school style, a Burberry scarf has the potential to look more country casual than football casual.

And it’s not just the check that is being welcomed back into the fold. That other chav-Sloane favourite, the monogram, is also enjoying a mini-revival. The original gold-on-brown Louis Vuitton monogram has once more been spotted around town on fashionable arms. Again, on a classic handbag and preferably not too box-fresh, it suggests heritage.

For those with an ego too developed to feel comfortable sporting somebody else’s initials, there is always the possibility of emulating Brad Pitt, who sported a pair of “BP” slippers at a recent première (probably safe to assume these weren’t a free gift at a petrol station).

2. The Creators of Burberry The Beat

Burberry The Beat Cologne was launched in 2008. It was the result of the hard work of two famous perfumers Domitille Bertier and Oliver Polge, who used music to come up with this fantastic fragrance.

These two are not new to the fragrance industry as they have already created several best-selling fragrances for Victor & Rolf and Christian Dior. Their collaboration for Victor & Rolf was called Flowerbomb. They created it in 2004 and it is now one of the most popular fragrances of this decade.

Domitille Bertier is also behind amazing women’s fragrances like Cacharel Liberet, Cacharel Noa Perle and Thierry Mugler Miroir des Secrets. On the other hand, Oliver Polge has collaborated with other perfumers to create remarkable men’s cologne and women’s fragrances like Azarro Visit, Bulgari Eau Parfum au The Rouge, Clinique Happy Heart, diesel Only The Brave, Dior Dior Homme, Dior Pure Poison, Emmanuel Ungaro Apparition Homme, Giorgio Armani Code, Guerlain Cuir Beluga, Jil Sander Jil, Kenzo Kenzo Power, La Perla Blue, Lancome Miracle Forever, Liz Claiborne Bora Bora, Moschino Friends Men, Robert Verino Gold, Salvatore Ferragamo F for Fascinating and Salvatore Ferragamo F by Ferragamo Pour Homme.

3. Burberry The Beat Cologne

Burberry The Beat is known for its distinct citrusy, woodsy and peppery fragrance that enhances a man’s masculine appeal. Burberry says that this cologne represents all the characteristics of a modern man. It’s totally masculine and sophisticated with an effortless and original identity.

The leatherwood in this Burberry cologne emanates a unique appeal that is a pleasant contrast to the vetiver bourbon and violet leaves accord, and it is highlighted by the sharp scent of spicy black pepper cedrat.

4. Modern and Sophisticated Men Use The Beat

Those who wear this men’s cologne for the first time immediately know that this fragrance is different. It is superbly modern but also sophisticated and definitely sexy. It is a good complement for the modern man who wants to radiate with power and confidence.

5. Burberry The Beat Smells Like…

This new addition to the Burberry cologne line is similar to L’eau Par Kenzo Ice because of the fresh, clean feeling of the cold citrus aroma. However, this is a bit different from Kenzo’s Ice because after some time this becomes warmer and delightfully spicy.

Its fresh citrus scent is somewhat similar to CK One Summer. The nice fruity blend is long lasting and will leave you smelling pleasant all day.

The Beat’s mild peppery fragrance is similar to Armani Diamonds. This Burberry cologne, an urbanely interesting creation, combines two important characteristics in men; mysteriousness and sex-appeal. When The Beat warms up to a soft amber scent, it becomes quite similar to Burberry Brit.

Burberry’s business soon made a name for itself in outdoors clothing. His 1880 invention called “gabardine” was a waterproof, yet breathable fabric. It was soon used in a number of outdoor outfits, like fishing attire, perfect for the wet English climate. Gabardine was finally patented in 1888.

The success of gabardine gave Burberry the weight he needed to open a shop in London itself in 1891. This remains today, and is actually the site of Burberry’s corporate headquarters. An interesting fact is that the company actually started using the name “Burberrys” during this period. Older Burberry products and advertisements still carry this name.

In 1895 Burberry developed a coat called the “Tielocken”, considered an early version of the well known trench coat.

As a new century dawned, man took up new challenges. One of these was Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton’s expeditions to Antarctica in 1911 and 1914 respectively. Burberry had the honor of being the official outfitters for these missions, which both met with success despite many hardships.

From 1914 onwards Burberry was often commissioned by the military to improve and adapt its coats for the various situations.

In 1955 another honor was bestowed on Burberry’s when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II awarded them the Royal Warrant. A second Royal Warrant followed in 1989, this time granted by his His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.

The 1970s to early 1990s proved an unfortunate period for Burberry as the brand became a staple of the British football cult. The company itself had to admit that the brand had become synonymous with thugs and hooligans.

Revitalized in the late 1990s by new CEO Rose Marie Bravo, particularly through the signing of model Kate Moss and gucci designer Christopher Bailey, Burberry re-established itself as a well recognized international luxury Fashion brand. Burberry has continued to find itself in controversial situations. In 2006 they were made the focus of a PETA campaign due to the continued use of animal fur in their clothing line. The closure of their Treorchy factory in 2007 with over 350 jobs being moved to Hong Kong and Mainland China also sparked Global protests. The company currently has boutiques in New York, Beverly Hills, Boston, Short Hills, NJ, Bal Harbour, San Francisco, Honolulu, Costa Mesa, Dallas, and Palm Beach.
