The ultimate learning program, ghd partnered two industry legends for an unrivalled educational experience leaving stylists self developed and closer to mastering ‘hair from the heart’ – writes Lauren King.

Jayne Wild

Held at Jayne Wild’s architectural master piece, Wildlife Milson’s Point, stepping into the buzz of the third and last day of the ghd Star Styler Protege Master Series bestowed a feeling you could imagine vibing from a dinner party at the Wild abode – warm, hospitable, aspirational and teetering with history making creative conceptualisation. There was a fierce and almost eery sense of knowing that something utterly awesome was in the making and could emerge from almost anywhere at any given time. And how could one be so sure? Because Romance was Born muse and flagship Australian session styler, Alan White and Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year, Jayne Wild were sailing the ship.

Alan White

In the making for over a year, the inaugural addition to the ghd education calendar welcomed rich interest from budding ghd stylists passionate to make a difference to tomorrow’s hair design. In a nutshell, each student was required to (with the direction of Jayne and Alan) develop and direct an editorial look suitable for a high-end Fashion spread – as shot by a leading photographer.

Participants first sat down as a group and were invited to discuss the ins and outs of what inspired them – touching on music, art, fashion, Style icons, eras and anything and everything in between.

Following further discussion and hands on work, Jayne and Alan deciphered the strengths and weaknesses of each student and made it their mission to zone in on areas requiring improvement while instilling the confidence to harness hairdressing from the heart – or hair design built from freedom. Because at the end of the day, who wants to copy someone else’s work right down to the last curl?

“We pinpointed their strengths and then worked to push each student beyond their boundaries. No one can see what’s in your head except you, so the result is never really going to be ‘wrong’ is it? It’s an emotive thing (session styling), a finger wave is never going to look like a carbon copy of the reference at hand, and that’s a good thing,” explains Alan.

Alan and Jayne then sent across a series of Italian VOGUE-style references unique to each student. Each editorial brief demanded the stylist to use skills within their ‘weak’ repertoire, yet was built from all things inspiring to each personality. Upon receiving their tailored brief, stylists were asked to source corresponding references illustrating their interpretation of Jayne and Alan’s vision. And the third day was when it all came to fruition – MAC make-up artists, professional wardrobe, Sydney’s hottest agency girls and leading hairdresser turned photographer, Matt Webb inclusive.

Although it’s hard to narrow down a key benefit from the ghd Star Styler Protege Master Series workshop, a respected point of difference comes in the clashing of two industry entities both equally passionate about their outlook on hair. Jayne Wild’s spiritual connection with hair artistry and Alan’s Quentin Tarantino-esque vision and daring demand on the human fabric combining to leave stylists empowered and equipped to lead, educate and manifest an editorial brief with divine aplomb.

“For me it’s about merging the world of Expo and the world of session styling together. If I know even just five of the 18 hairdressers here walk away educated and willing to produce hair from the heart opposed to the typical shoulder length, straight, three-quarter cropped image, then I’m happy,” reiterates Jayne on her own approach to the industry and drive behind three Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year trophies.

Always there to guide with wisdom, Jayne and Alan were cautious never to suffocate a students’ vision or thought process. Rather, commentary such as ‘you take it wherever you want to take it, maybe it’s about losing a little bit, maybe it’s about this texture here that’s important, you’ll know, you’ll find it,’ assured Alan to a student tending to a contemporary tribal brief.

“We actually want them to encounter difficulties today. Like this girl over here, her vision has been so strong and direct the entire time, yet the texture isn’t forming exactly as she intended it to, so we are now guiding her through the process of working with what she’s got, and that’s what it’s all about, preparing for such scenarios that are likely to happen on the day of any shoot,” said Alan.

And the proof was in the pudding. Not only from the magnificent, Harpers Bazaar fit images popping up on Matt’s MAC BookPro, but from the conversations (and tear sheets!) bouncing between students and teachers. Pam from X-Treme Lengths in Buderim, was very deservedly vaunting an editorial spread she had completed between ghd Master Series sessions for a local magazine.

“Pam came to us so concerned about this brief that asked for natural hair. So we took her back to basics and recapped on the fundamentals,” explains Jayne.

“It was a stress free day for me thanks to what Alan and Jayne taught me,” recalls Pam. “And working with ghd products made it an effortless day also. The weightlessness of the products allows you to just keep adding until you have the perfect texture."

Another example came in a salon owner who, upon arriving to the ghd Star Styler Protege Master Series, literally couldn’t blow dry correctly. Her issue was an inability to generate volume from the simple process of a blow-dry, and by the end her time with Alan and Jayne, created an image with relaxed, yet perfectly swept body ready for the glossy beauty pages of any magazine.

And this is the gift of ghd – an ability to instil confidence through beauty intelligence.

“The Cuban Princess collection was definitive ‘Alex Perry’ with a multitude of beautiful textures and ornate/embellished detailing. As such, the hair brief was kept simple and very sleek to really augment the designer’s intricate Style. A sleek, mid/high crown pony tail was chosen as the perfect hair design to compliment Perry’s decorative collection. "

Get the look:

1. As with any hair-up style, it is easier to work with unwashed hair. Hair that has just been washed is often quite flyaway and therefore resistant to being moulded into a particular shape or style.
2. It may sound pretty basic, but the fist job is to remove any knots/tangles from the hair to ensure the hair being worked into a ponytail, sits perfectly, void of any unsightly lumps or bumps.
3. Once the hair is malleable, apply a small amount of ghd Smoothing Balm about an inch away from the root are, all the way around the hair line.
4. Work the product through the hair, focussing from the root to mid lengths with a smoothing brush such as the ghd Oval Dressing Brush.
5. Use the ghd Gold Classic styler to straighten the hair and secure into a ponytail with a snag proof hair elastic.
6. Finish with ghd Ultimate Hairspray for extra hold and ghd Shining Serum.

“Her schedule is quite intense but if she gets some free time she’s considering dropping by,” said a source.

One star who will attend the industry event is British ‘80s supermodel Yasmin Le Bon, who will join friend Gail Elliott at the model-turned-designer’s Little Joe fashion show. Word is the 46-year-old wife of Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon, could also be hitting the catwalk.

There’s always a huge buzz as to whether an international star will grace the front rows at RAFW. Some years have delivered great talent such as Dita Von Teese and Mischa Barton, and others, well, haven’t.

Fashion purists argue that it’s not about the celebrities, but you can bet if someone like Perry shows up to a designer’s show the global publicity will be absolutely priceless.

Justin Bieber’s condition was made manifest by leaked documents that were taken from Bieber’s endocrinologist, who is responsible for administering Growth Hormone to Bieber for his condition.

Throughout Bieber’s career, the pop star has been mocked for having an adolescent frame. Many have jokingly said that Justin Bieber still hasn’t hit puberty. What has been said in jest is apparently not entirely unfounded. More specifically, Bieber suffers from hypopituitarism, which is the result of lack of growth hormone as well as deficiency in the anterior pituitary hormone.

Justin Bieber has since been bombarded by gossip-hungry paparazzi, and has released the following statement, “I do indeed suffer from GHD, and it is nothing that I am ashamed of. To everybody who has made fun of me for aspects of my appearance that are related to my disorder, I forgive you. I didn’t want this to be made so public, but now that it is; please don’t make fun of my stature or high pitched voice. It’s not something I can help.”

Just kidding…April Fool’s!

On April 19th, Katy and her husband Russell showed up at the premiere of his new film ‘Arthur’. The premiere took place at the Cineworld O2 Arena in London and Katy and Russell proved that they are very much in love. Usually one for bright and bold clashing colours, Katy kept things rather simple in an elegant, floor length Nude gown from the Philip Armstrong Fall 2011 collection. The Assymetrical gown dazzled with the use of gorgeous embellishment on the front and Katy teamed the dress with matching Brian Atwood Nude pumps. No accessories were needed to complete the outfit, instead Katy used her long flowing locks and fresh make-up finish off the outfit successfully.

Things have only been looking positive for Katy as of late. After the release of her gorgeous OPI nail polish collection, Katy went on to successfully release a sexy new perfume, titled Purr and went on to wow fans on her recent UK and US tours. She has also recently been named as the new face of GHD and Thomas Sabo jewellery.

Autodesk, a world leader in 3D design, engineering and entertainment software, today announced that it has signed an enterprise licensing agreement with GHD, one of the world’s leading engineering, architecture and environmental consulting firms to provide Autodesk software and services. The contract value of the deal is more than AUD 5 million, making it the largest ever contract win for Autodesk in Asia Pacific.

This new agreement will enable GHD access to 25 Autodesk products and in excess of 1000 licensed seats globally. In addition, GHD will have access to Autodesk consulting services to help integrate the technology and assist in optimising their investment. GHD is also continuing its long standing engagement with KarelCAD to support the solution going forward in partnership with Autodesk.

“We are extremely pleased to further strengthen our long-standing relationship with GHD with this global agreement,” said Paul Arthur, Sales Director, Autodesk Australia and New Zealand. “GHD is a true Australian success story, delivering innovative and world-class design solutions across five continents. We are delighted that Autodesk software and services will enable GHD to support their further push towards 3D design solutions as they scale for future growth.”

GHD works across a wide range of international projects, some requiring them to collaborate across timezones and markets. The interoperability of Autodesk’s technology solutions combined with this new flexible licensing arrangement will allow GHD design teams to collaborate and be more resource-efficient.

“We needed a solution that was flexible, allowing us to scale and collaborate effectively across multiple sites around the world,” said Gavin Cheetham, Global CADD Manager for GHD. “Autodesk was able to offer the best solutions to streamline our licencing while enabling us to use the latest Building Information Modelling (BIM) software tools to support our clients’ current and future needs.”

BIM is an integrated process for exploring a project’s key physical and functional characteristics digitally before it’s built, helping to deliver projects faster and more economically, whilst maximising environmental outcomes. GHD is seeing a strong demand from its customers for 3D solutions and is planning to pro-actively use BIM to help design innovative projects, reduce costs and deliver better performance.

But then a female colleague piped up: ”No. mousse is back. I was surprised to be offered it at the hairdressers yesterday.”
Remember mousse – that sticky, frothy, highly scented, aerated product that volumised our big eighties hair without the extremity of gel? Recall the slurpy sound of it coming out of the can (if you had remembered to shake well, of course)? Mousse was the texture of the decade. I had mousse foundation and mousse blusher from Elizabeth Arden, mousse body moisturiser, mousse self-tanner. I probably ate chocolate mousse, too (or was that the seventies?).
It is no surprise mousse is back on the shelves. Bouffy hair is back. And mousse works well in all mid-length and long hair, providing light and natural hold (at least the modern formulations do).
What sort of product do you use in your hair? Have you rediscovered mousse (or, for that matter, Brylcreem?). What sort of texture gives your Style the pizzazz it needs? How many products did you have to go through to find it?

Such image influence is so wide and profound that in people’s mind, women meeting these standards can be qualified to be called "beauty". I used to firmly adorn these beliefs and worked myself for that direction until one day totally changed my life.

My head had a trauma in a car accident and was badly in need for a surgery on my head. As a result, my long hair I had been keeping for years was shaved off in a minute. For quite a long time, I still could not get used to how I was looked in the mirror in short hair. Although it had been quite a few month after the accident and I totally recovered from the injury, the aftermath seemingly was going to stay in my heart for long. As I felt all my confidence was gone without my long hair. I never had my hair grew so short, not even long enough to touch the shoulders. I felt so disappointed that I even had the thought to quit attending the annual prom I had prepared for month in collage. In order to cheer me up, my friend Jessica sent me a secret present. I opened up the box and found out it was a GHD hair stick. Looking at my frizzy, coarse short hair in mirror, I doubted much if the GHD could do anything to change my look. I let Jessica deal with my disastrous hair with GHD. The moment I opened my eyes, I still could not believe the one in mirror growing in short hair was me. I never pictured myself in such short hair could still look attractive. GHD added colors to the monotonous short hairs and enabled girls to change their look with the most stylish hairstyle on their own.

Thanks to GHD, with a fresh new look, I went to the school prom. I was not the most beautiful girl at that night, but definitely the most special girl who looked cool but still elegant with the stylish short hair. Ever since then, GHD becomes part of my life, as I decide to keep short hair to have a change.
