Designers Dean and Dan Caten — better known as DSquared — clearly weren’t taking part in promoting the Canadian Cancer Society’s upcoming campaign to quit smoking for the month of March while they were in Milan for their 1960s’ prom night-inspired women’s Fall/Winter 2012 runway collection on Monday.

Some of the models walked the runway with custom-made, bejeweled cigarette holders with the cigarettes lit.

Neither the twin brothers nor representatives from the label returned requests for comment Tuesday.

But critics say the move was both irresponsible and unnecessary.

“If you’re doing a fashion show where the objective is . . . to inspire people to obtain that look and emulate that look and it’s being sold as sort of a cool, glamorous, high Style kind of thing — and you’re using smoking — then you’re putting smoking into that category,” said Jen McNeely, editor-in-chief and founder of SheDoesTheCity.com, a website that showcases Toronto and Montreal fashion.

McNeely admitted her site does have pictures of people smoking in street photography, but said she would never condone a planned editorial post featuring smoking or cigarettes.

“You have to take into account what the responsibility of your actions are,” she said. “There should be nobody glamorizing smoking.”

In truth, the fashion world, in North America at least, has moved away from aligning itself with the hard-to-kick habit, as has much of pop culture.

The prevalence of smoking in the movies has been on the decline since 2005, according to a 2010 study from the U.S. Center for Disease Control, even though period era movies and TV shows like HBO’s Mad Men still feature it heavily.

The Matinée Fashion Foundation, under Imperial Tobacco, was a major sponsor in the North American fashion world, including Toronto Fashion Week, until the rules for advertising were restricted by harsher implementation of Canada’s Tobacco Act in 2003, according to Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada.

As for DSquared’s show, Toronto fashion designer David Dixon said what appears to be a catwalk gimmick was totally unnecessary.

“It is a distraction to the show, to the presentation of the collection,” Dixon said. “That would be a problem for me as a designer — that people are paying more attention to the props then they are to the collection.”

And while backstage culture may have at one time supported the habit, Dixon said the next generation of models — like their non-model counterparts — are turning away from cigarettes with the prevalence of antismoking campaigns.

“Even backstage now, there are very few girls who smoke,” Dixon said.

That doesn’t stop the Catens. In a backstage video, the pair can be seen smoking, drinking and joking with the girls as they get them ready.

DSquared’s show is certainly not the first time models have walked the catwalk with cigarettes.

Kate Moss controversially did it when she walked for Louis Vuitton at Paris Fashion Week last year.

And it’s not the first time the twin brothers have used gimmicks in their shows. Last year, their models walked a muddy catwalk with another vice — bottles of Heineken.

So what’s fashionable about drinking and smoking? Not much, even if Europeans are doing it, local experts say.

“I don’t think it adds anything from a fashion perspective,” McNeely said.

The news that Kate Moss has teamed up with Spanish retailer has sparked waves of excitement among customers and the early sneak peek of the campaign have greatly helped increase the anticipation. Now, the wait for the Mango spring/summer 2012 ad campaign is finally over and we can finally decide if it was worth the wait. Much like the overall spirit of the brand, the campaign lensed by Terry Richardson adopts an elegant yet relaxed perspective which shows the star’s natural beauty.

Denim, simple tees, feminine pleated dresses, embellished belts or classy short leather jackets might seem like pretty basic pieces, but they can be easily mixed and matched for creating gorgeous outfits with little effort and just a touch of imagination. Kate’s relaxed allure and spectacular looks are a conclusive evidence of this often underestimated Style principle. Despite not being focused on closely following mainstream trends, the high emphasis on dresses still reflects a concern with following the main style direction for the new season.

The accent on tasteful attire options is immediately evident and it’s quite easy to understand why accessories are not used as a way to create new points of interest but rather as a functional touch that completes the picture without making significant changes. Cuff bracelets, fringed handbags and sparkly earrings and elegant yet comfy sandals are the simple yet fabulous additions the Spanish retailer focuses on for the latest campaign.

Last but certainly not least, the styling choices are also worth mentioning as they have a major contribution to the overall vibe of the campaign. The styling ensured by Geraldine Saglio is kept simple and classy with only a few textural touches in terms of hair styling and a classy, natural makeup look which can easily work for different events and circumstances. A creative return to style basics can be incredibly refreshing and the ad campaign does a fabulous job reminding us of it.

In the interview, the 25-year-old songstress dishes on all the accusations on the internet speculating that her millionaire father bought her success, that her seductive lips are the result of a plastic surgery, or that she is some sort of industry creation. Have a nosey! Lana Del Rey covers New York Times T Magazine Women’s Fashion Spring 2012 issue photographed by Terry Richardson. In the interview, the beautiful 25-year-old songstress talks about all the accusations on the internet saying that her millionaire father backed her career, that she has undergone different plastic surgeries in order to get those sexy lips, or that she is some sort of industry creation.
"I mean, I met everyone who is anyone in the music industry over the last six years and I was unsignable," she says. "That’s what I was told by everyone. I would play my songs, explain what I was trying to do, and I’d get, ‘You know who’s No. 1 in 13 countries right now? Kesha.’"

Nothing Lana has written follow the rules of a pop song nor has a regular length for radio. "’Video Games’ was a four-and-a-half-minute ballad. No instruments on it. It was too dark, too personal, too risky, not commercial. It wasn’t pop until it was on the radio," Del Rey told the magazine.

Speaking about all the rumours speculating that her voluptuous, seductive lips are in fact the result of a plastic surgery, Del Rey says in the interview with T Magazine that, "It’s fine. They’re real lips, I mean. In real life my lips don’t look that big. I think because I cartoonized the footage of myself in the video for ‘Video Games’ things look exaggerated."On the anxiety she feels performing on stage, the songstress confesses that, "I’m not by nature a showstopper. I love to write and play songs, but onstage, all these things come into play. I’m always saying to myself, Don’t mess up. Don’t mess up."

When she was just 19, a small indie label signed her as Lizzy Grant for $10,000. "It was amazing. I got my own place to live. I lived on that money, finished school. At that point I envisioned having a very nice career touring small clubs, continuing my studies in philosophy and volunteering. It’s actually the same vision I have today. I have a serious life here. I have a really big family. You know, I’m needed here," she told the magazine.

In the interview with T Magazine, the songstress also opens up and talks about love and loss. "I felt the same way for a really long time, and then I met someone who I guess I fell in love with," she says. "I just didn’t know I could feel differently. That time with him became sort of a place that I fell back to in my memory."
As on breakup, Lana admits that, "Well, I mean, the breakup is a part of it in the way that in the midst of loss you try to still look towards the light and not fall to pieces or do self-destructive things."

Asked about where she lives, Del Rey tells the magazine that she’s looking for a place, but for now she is living on her ex-boyfriend’s couch in Williamsburg. "Staying with my ex-boyfriend. I live on his couch," she coolly confesses in her interview with T Magazine.

The Vita also includes access to the web and social networks such as Facebook, as well as adding new web features to games.

In largely positive reviews prior to its release, the Vita was praised for its unprecedented technical qualities. Daily Telegraph reviewer Tom Hoggins wrote in his Sony PlayStation Vita review that it proved “Sony was not giving up without a fight”. Sales in Japan, however, have dipped after an initial success when the device first went on sale late last year.

Topshop want you, in a nightie (outside and not in bed) NOW – but is it a Fashion nightmare or nightYEAH!?Fashion shows are a bit like buses, you wait all season for one – and then hundreds come along at once. Only these buses are really chic, packed with celebrities, a whole lorra trends – and they don’t accept Oyster cards.

Okay, so they’re not really like buses at all. But the Topshop Unique autumn/winter 2012 show *was* bustling with hot new trends (ahem) meaning we can ALL jump aboard the trends bus (ding ding) and ride straight into AW12 Style now. If staying seasons ahead is your sort of thing…

But before we all go earning serious style smuggery points with our mates, let’s look at the celebs’ who turned out for Topshop’s LFW AW12 show mere moments ago, starting with…

Nicola Roberts:The singer wore a cream mini dress plus a mahusive pussy bow (*sniggers*) wrapped around her neck, completing her look with a cream Chanel 2.55 bag. Nice one all round. She loved the show saying: "The collection has given girls everywhere a reason to look forward to winter.." True fact, though let’s have a little bit of summer first, eh Nic’?!

Front row regulars Olivia Palermo, Alexa Chung, Poppy Delevingne and Pixie Geldof were all there too, doing what they do best by looking super-stylish, chatting fahhsion and sitting on the front row.Chloe Green popped along too. Only, it’d be weird if the Topshop heiress wasn’t there, what with her being Sir Pip’s daughter and all. Thankfully the Made in Chelsea ’star’ wore a Topshop Unique SS12 knit for the show too. What would have been MORE exciting, is if she’d have worn a pair of green-soled heels from her debut shoe collection for Topshop, out this May. Only she didn’t, so we’ll move on to…

The Trends!

Like the new collection? You have new head Topshop Unique designer Emma Farrow to thank for that. And here’s what Emma / Topshop Unique want us all wearing (uniquely, mind) come September 2012:Military details

Be it military bombers, exposed zips, parachute straps (hello Victoria Beckham’s AW12 collection) over-sized pockets or scuba necklines – as seen at Stella McCartney too – if it looks mean ‘n’ militant, it’s in.

Pyjama party

Like Stella McCartney’s SS12 line before them, Topshop are hosting a big ol’ Pyjama Party and EVERYONE’S invited! From leather slouchy pyjama pants – as spotted at Mulberry and *on* Alexa Chung (in JW Anderson at House of Holland) – to traditional silky paisley drawers, nightwear = daywear this autumn. Bag an early invite and hotfoot it to Zara now, who’ve nailed the trend in their sleep.

Does the idea of going to work in your nightwear feel more nightmare, than hell yeah!? Why not try:

Leather

Leather trims, leather panels, leather contrast sleeves and leather boots were all go on the Unique catwalk. Invest now while it’s still chilly to get maximum wear out of yours.

Rolling in the deep…roll necks

And rolling out in a store near you soon, thanks to Mulberry, Kate Middleton and now Topshop Unique. Think Milk Tray man meets poetic type and get rollin’, rollin’, rollin’ asap. Next thing you know love bites will be back en vogue and all…

Yes pleats!

On midi skirts to mini skirts in cotton and in leather strips, pleats were the order of the day at the Topshop show. Team yours with a granddad cardi’ and laced-up hiking boots for instant fashion kudos.

Khaki

A principal colour trend in Victoria Beckham’s AW12 New York collection, Topshop Unique have cemented khaki’s status as THE colour of autumn by, well, following suit. Best worn with exposed zip details at the back, and while listening to Creep by TLC. Edgy.

360 Dungarees

Dungarees were allover the catwalk but particular mention should go to the velvet full length pair that we are *pretty* sure dungeree fan Alexa Chung will be slipping on soon enough…

Booty call

"The new boot length is halfway up the knee, girls, you heard it here first", say Topshop. Best worn patent, and ideally with toe-cap details. Oh crap, best start filing down those (slightly too high) knee high boots now then. Humpf.

And the Beauty Call

The model’s hair at today’s Topshop Unique show was styled by none other than celeb’ stylist Sam McKnight, who had flown straight from this morning’s Mulberry presentation, fashion fact fans.

Sam says: "The hair at Unique is ‘hair from the night before’ aka dishevelled, mussed up and laced with dry shampoo. No more chilly morning showers then? This is music to our, err, hair!

When: Thursday night

Where: Mann Village Westwood, Los Angeles

Who: Jennifer Aniston, writer/producer/actor Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux, Malin Akerman, Kathryn Hahn, writer/producer/actor Ken Marino, Joe Lo Truglio, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Jordan Peele, Michaela Watkins, Ian Patrick and Linda Lavin; producer Judd Apatow, writer/director/producer David Wain

The hippie life: In Wanderlust, Aniston and Rudd play Manhattan couple George and Linda who are squeezed out of the city due to the recession and land in a commune in Georgia, where free love reigns and marijuana is the cocktail of choice. Inside that commune, bedrooms and bathrooms are stripped of their doors and partners are shared. So, could this cast imagine leading the hippie life themselves? Aniston said she couldn’t comply with two big rules: "It’s a tossup between the free love and no doors on the bathrooms," she said.

Akerman agrees: "I don’t think so," Akerman said. "I think I could do aspects of it. The freedom of living together is great. I just wouldn’t want to share myself or my husband with people. But I think I’m more of a city girl, to be honest." Hahn also wanted privacy. "I think I’d need my own space," Hahn said. "I think I’d need some doors." "I went to Burning Man one and it was a miserable disaster," Kenney-Silver added.

Love on the back burner: Aniston and Theroux made sure the night belonged to the movie, not the tabloids. The new power couple, who met on the set of Wanderlust, chose not to pose together on the red carpet. Instead, Aniston embraced Akerman and Hahn and posed for a photo op with Rudd. A clean-shaven Theroux, meanwhile, did a few media stops and then bee-lined inside the theater.

No on-set romance: Wain said that despite the free-love vibe on the Wanderlust set, the Aniston-Theroux spark didn’t ignite until after the production wrapped. "That wasn’t on set, that happened way after the movie was done," he said.

New side of Jen: Following her acclaimed turn as a sex-addicted dentist in last summer’s Horrible Bosses, Aniston continues her R-rated run in this film. "I think she goes to places in this movie that she’s never gone in a million different ways," Wain said. "Her character and her as an actress breaks out of her shell and really explodes." Aniston said Wanderlust will take you by surprise. "You’re going to laugh you’re a— off," she promised. "It’s bizarre, it’s nothing you’re prepared for." Wain said the film is "a fun departure for her. She’s kind of America’s Sweetheart, so we thought it would be great for her to then kind of play against that – join a commune and go deep into it. She was totally game."

Improv experts: Wain had the cast incorporate a hefty amount of improv into the script. "It’s part of what gives it the fun quality, I think," he said. Kenney-Silver agreed. "We basically did some takes of the script and then we would improv the rest of the day," she said. "It’s my dream. It’s how we did Reno."

Nearly nudes: Nudists abound at the Wanderlust commune, and Akerman said as far as she knows, those were no actors. "We had like two or three days (with nudists)," Akerman said. Although the cast assumed it would be awkward for them to be on camera, "We found ourselves going, ‘Nope, this is awkward for us, not for them. They feel really comfortable with all of this.’ So, kudos to them." And even Aniston goes (momentarily) topless in the film – sort of. "Movie magic," Wain said.

Apatow’s crew:Wanderlust is Rudd’s fourth collaboration with Apatow, who produced Wanderlust, and hardly his last. The two collaborate next on This is 40. "It’s kind of a sequel to Knocked Up, about Paul and Leslie turning 40 and then things go wrong." He said Katherine Heigl will not appear but "a lot of fun people are in it," including Melissa McCarthy, Megan Fox and Albert Brooks.

Fashion notes: Aniston took a spin in a strapless black and gray Tom Ford dress; Akerman wore a pink and red Sonia Rykiel dress.

News you can use: Akerman broke some news of her own on the red carpet. "I’m going to do a TV show with Portia de Rossi called The Smart One," she said, grinning. "I’m so excited. It’s single-camera, half hour. I needed a little break from the moving and shaking around (in film) and I was looking for awhile for a really great TV show and finally we found it. So I signed on." Who does she play? "We play sisters, and I’m a former weather girl who’s now become mayor and Portia’s kind of a really smart business woman. She’s my right-hand woman. I have the charisma and she has the brains."

Director’s cut: Wain said to look out for a scene in the film that George attempts to talk himself into sleeping with commune hottie Eva (Akerman). "One of the craziest things (in Wanderlust) is the scene where Paul Rudd talks to himself in the mirror in the bathroom," said the director. "The first half of the scene that you see is pretty much the script, and then he just kind of went off and it’s just incredible what he did." Akerman agreed. "I don’t know how he kept it together," Akerman said. "Tears were rolling down my face I was laughing so hard."

“Every day, I learn something new. It’s really quite fantastic,” he told me with a twinkle in his eye.

The latest thing the master told me that he’s learned about himself is the power of his own passion and drive to keep on coming up with exciting clothes to both charm and empower the women he so loves.

His fall/winter 2012 collection was no exception. Using jewels as his main inspiration, many of the gorgeous garments featured large digital prints of heirloom brooches and giant crystals.

Some jewel pendants were actually sewn onto some of the pieces. Inspiring plays on texture abounded, with rich, sparkling tweeds, fine Chantilly lace appliquéd on nude chiffon, and dazzling silver embroidery on both cashmere sweaters and one gleaming white satin dress.

Sporty little fur jackets and vests added to the luxurious feel of this youthful collection, and pastel shades of soft pink and icy blue never looked so rich. Delicate jewelled headbands and demure necklines were utterly romantic, with standout gowns featuring rows of taffeta ruffles. But there were also simpler goddess looks and a couple of sensational tulle fantasies that would certainly do a red carpet proud.

The Vegas oddsmakers were right: Adele was a sure thing at this year’s Grammy Awards. Further cementing her nascent superstardom, the English singer swept all six of the categories she was nominated in at Sunday’s Grammy Awards ceremonies, collecting album of the year honors for "21" and record and song of the year trophies for "Rolling in the Deep." Adele, who was named best new artist in 2009, is only the second artist in history to take all four major Grammy categories. Christopher Cross attained the feat in 1981 with a four-award sweep. The singer, nee Adele Adkins, broke into tears as she accepted the album of the year award. "This is ridiculous," she said, and made a point of thanking "every radio programmer and broadcaster" who helped put "Rolling in the Deep" and other tunes from "21" over the top. This year’s surprising best new artist winner was Bon Iver. The folk-skewed Wisconsin-bred singer-songwriter, ne Justin Vernon, triumphed in a field that included the ultra-hot rap talent Nicki Minaj. Vernon had publicly declined to perform at the Grammy ceremony. Adele’s "21" also won as best pop vocal album, "Someone Like You" captured best pop solo performance and the clip for "Rolling in the Deep" took best short-form video. Adele’s six trophies equaled Beyonce’s record one-night tally for a female performer, set in 2010. Paul Epworth, who co-wrote "Rolling in the Deep" and produced that hit, was named non-classical producer of the year, and shared song and album of the year honors. The night’s other big winners, perennial Recording Academy favorites Foo Fighters, dominated the rock categories with five victories: best rock album (for "Wasting Light") best hard rock/metal performance (for "White Limo"), best rock performance and best rock song (for "Walk") and best longform video (for "Foo Fighters: Back and Forth," directed and co-produced by James Moll). The band performed twice on the Grammycast. "We made this record in my garage with some microphones and a tape machine," said Foo Fighters leader Dave Grohl. "It shows that the human element of making music is most important." As he left the stage Grohl shouted "Long live rock ‘n’ roll!" Kanye West — this year’s top nominee with seven nods — once again had to satisfy himself with rap wins. West captured four awards to add to his 14 previous wins, for best rap/sung collaboration and best rap song (for "All of the Lights"), best rap performance (for "Otis," shared with Jay-Z) and best rap album ("My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy"). Few Grammy triumphs have felt quite as inevitable as Adele’s. The 22-year-old singer served as the music industry’s savior last year with her sophomore album "21." The top-selling collection has sold 6.38 million copies domestically to date, and remains No. 1 on the U.S. album chart after nearly a year in release. With one more week atop the chart, "21" will tie Whitney Houston’s 20-week SoundScan-era record for longevity at the pinnacle, set in 1992-93 with the soundtrack for "The Bodyguard." With stylistic nods to Brit singers past, most notably Dusty Springfield and Amy Winehouse, "21" was lofted by three smash singles, "Rolling in the Deep," "Someone Like You" and "Set Fire to the Rain." The rich-voiced singer’s seemingly universal appeal tagged her as an awards season shoo-in. The vocalist was the headline attraction for this year’s Grammycast, emerging from months off the stage after throat surgery for a hemorrhaged vocal cord forced cancellation of a sold-out U.S. tour. Asked backstage how she handled the jolt of having to undergo surgery, Adele was sanguine about the experience. " "It’s actually been really peaceful. Being silent in such a noisy world, it was sort of a blessing in disguise," she said. "I’ve actually never been happier." By an accident of fate, Adele’s ascension on Sunday seemed a passing of the torch after the death Saturday of Houston, who rose to fame in the ’80s with a similar brand of soulful, highly accessible pop. Houston’s memory loomed both on and off the Grammy stage on Sunday. Jennifer Hudson paid tribute with a televised performance of "I Will Always Love You," Houston’s No. 1 hit from the 1992 soundtrack of "The Bodyguard." Hudson ended the performance by ad libbing, "Whitney, we loved you." Stevie Wonder said from the stage, "I just want to say to Whitney up in Heaven, we all love you, Whitney Houston." Winners and performers offered their thoughts about the singer backstage. Vocalist-songwriter Melanie Fiona, who shared two R&B awards with Cee Lo Green for "Fool For You," said, "Whitney is the first voice and memory I have of music… I would not be up here as an artist, a nominee and a winner without her influence on my life … I feel so proud to be able say that she was such a huge influence on me." Bonnie Raitt told reporters, "I’m sure you’re still in shock, too…It’s stunning, her vocal range and power." Houston’s impact extended beyond the pop discipline: Joyce DiDonato, winner for best classical vocal solo, said, "She was larger than life, and the summation of good singing for me. I have a lot of opera friends, and we were all heartbroken to hear the news." The diminutive, angularly coiffed electronic/dance artist Skrillex broke through with three wins, taking best dance/electronica album (for "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprights"), best dance recording (for the album’s title track) and best remixed recording (for Benny Benassi’s "Cinema"). Taylor Swift added two Grammy awards to her career total of four, winning best country solo performance and best country song for "Mean." Americana duo the Civil Wars’ "Barton Hollow" won as both best folk album, while its title track won best country duo/group performance. As ever, some sentimental favorites prevailed. Paul McCartney, who was honored as MusiCares’ person of the year on Friday and performed during the telecast, collected his 15th Grammy – a best historical album honor, for last year’s reissue of his 1973 album "Band On the Run." A mere 49 years after receiving his first Grammy — record of the year, for "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" — Tony Bennett won Nos. 15 and 16, for best traditional pop album (for "Duets II," his all-star No. 1 album) and. best pop performance by a duo or group, for "Body and Soul," his track with Amy Winehouse. The late singer’s parents joined him onstage at the afternoon ceremony. "We shouldn’t be here — our darling daughter should be here," said Mitch Winehouse. "These are the cards we’re dealt." Alison Krauss, the most rewarded female performer in Grammy history, received her 27th trophy: "Paper Airplane," her latest release with her group Union Station, was named best bluegrass album. In the music for visual media categories, "Boardwalk Empire Volume 1," the soundtrack for the HBO series – collected best compilation soundtrack for Stewart Lerman, Randall Poster and Kevin Weaver. Alexander Desplat won best score soundtrack for Oscar winner "The King’s Speech." Alan Menken and Glenn Slater received the prize for best song written for visual media, for "I See the Light" from Disney’s "Tangled." Tony winner "The Book of Mormon," written by Robert Lopez, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, was named best musical theater album. Apart from Adele’s return to perform "Rolling in the Deep" — which drew one of the longest ovations in recent Grammy history –the kudocast’s chief draws were distinctly old-school. McCartney performed "My Valentine," a track from his new standards collection, with Diana Krall and Joe Walsh, and a show-closing "Abbey Road" medley; the reunited Beach Boys played their 1966 hit "Good Vibrations" with Foster the People and Maroon 5; and Glen Campbell, who is retiring from performing after the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, sang "Rhinestone Cowboy" to climax a tribute segment. Alicia Keys and Raitt paid tribute to the R&B diva Etta James, who died in January at 73, with a duet on "A Sunday Kind of Love." Complete list of winners: 1. Record of the Year Rolling in the Deep, Adele 2. Album of the Year 21, Adele 3. Song of the Year Rolling in the Deep, Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth (Adele) 4. Best New Artist Bon Iver 5.

British soul singer Adele won three early Grammys on Sunday, including best pop solo performance for her song "Someone Like You," in a show that began on a somber note with a prayer for late pop superstar Whitney Houston.

Adele, whose album "21" was among the smash hits of 2011, took the stage and thanked her doctors who helped her recover from recent surgery to remove a polyp from her vocal cord. "Seeing as it’s a vocal performance I need to thank my doctors, I suppose, who brought my voice back," she said.

Aside from surgery, the British singer has enjoyed a stellar year. Her sophomore album "21" has sold more than 6.3 million copies in the U.S. and broken many sales records, including spending 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart.

She has thrilled fans singing about personal heartbreak in a raw, soulful manner in singles including "Rolling in the Deep," "Someone Like You" and "Set Fire to the Rain."

Rockers Foo Fighters were the other big winners early in the show, picking up four Grammys in rock music categories and a fifth for best long form music video. Their hit "Walk" earned them best rock performance.

"This is a great honor because this record was a special record for our band. Rather than go to the best studio … we made this one in my garage with some microphones and a tape machine," said frontman Dave Grohl. "It shows that the human element of making music is what’s most important."

But as jubilant as the audiences was for Adele — they gave her a standing ovation — and as much as Foo Fighters rocked the house, the Grammys audience was equally somber about the death of Houston on Saturday in a Beverly Hills hotel room.

Host LL Cool J took the stage and offered a prayer for Houston, her fans and her family. "Although she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed by her musical spirit," he said.

Organizers played a video of Houston performing her hit "I Will Always Love You" from a previous Grammy show. Later, actress an4d singer Jennifer Hudson, who won an Oscar for her role in movie musical "Dreamgirls," is expected to perform the same song in a tribute to the singer.

Other early winners included Jay-Z and Kanye West for best rap performance with their song, "Otis" from the album "Watch the Throne," but they failed to show up to claim their prize.

Rousing performances came from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Chris Brown, Coldplay and Rihanna, Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, and Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt sang a duet of "A Sunday Kind of Love" from Etta James, who also died in 2012.

Grammy organizers give out awards in more than 75 categories and many early winners mentioned Houston. Singer Melanie Fiona, who won with Cee Lo Green for traditional R&B performance for "Fool For You," said she was inspired by Houston.

"Whitney Houston, I would not be standing up here if not for you," Fiona said. Backstage, she told reporters her mother had rocked her in the cradle to Houston’s songs when she was a baby.

WINEHOUSE IN THE HOUSE

Perhaps the most poignant moment came when Mitch and Janis Winehouse, parents of late singer Amy Winehouse who died of excessive drinking in 2011, accepted the award for best pop duo or group performance – Amy and Tony Bennett – "Body and Soul."

"Long live Whitney Houston. Long live Amy Winehouse and long live Etta James," referring to the "At Last" singer who died earlier this year. "There’s a beautiful girl band up there."

Country singer Taylor Swift picked up two awards for her song "Mean," about people she felt had wronged her, and DJ Skrillex won two Grammys for best dance recording and top dance/electronica album with "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites."

British soul singer Adele, who received six nominations and was expected to be a big winner, claimed her second Grammy for best pop vocal album with "21," and earned a third Grammy for best short form music video with the song, "Rolling in the Deep."

All eyes will be on Adele in top categories such as best album and record of the year. She will perform in front of a live audience for the first time since vocal cord surgery in November 2011. Fans will be listening to hear if her voice is back to its sultry, soulful best.

Rapper Kanye West earned seven nominations, but was shut out of the top categories, paving the way for Adele to be the night’s big winner – or surprise loser if she fails to overcome competition. Along with his rap performance trophy, West won a second award for best rap album with "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy."

In the category of best album, Adele’s "21" faces rockers Foo Fighters and their hit "Wasting Light," Lady Gaga with "Born This Way," Bruno Mars and his "Doo-Wops & Hooligans," and pop star Rihanna with "Loud."

Adele also figures prominently among nominees for record of the year where "Rolling in the Deep" squares off against rockers Bon Iver and "Holocene," Bruno Mars for "Grenade," Mumford & Sons with "The Cave," and Katy Perry for "Firework."
