Everyone decamped, then, with Pimms in hand to the stands to watch the English team triumph over Brazil in the Coronation Cup.

"I make it my business to see at least one man on a horse," said Amber Le Bon. "Then I come back to the Cartier tent and enjoy the rest of the afternoon."

At the Cartier marquee for afternoon tea, Poppy Delevingne, Charlotte Tilbury, Christie Brinkley, Yasmin Mills and Margo Stilley stood as the sun set in shades of lemon and cornflower and ate macaroons, mini lemon tarts, and the tiniest of carrot cakes.

Margo was wearing a vermillion vintage dress that she picked up in Italy. "I love the Italians," she said, "they can’t bear to wear anything more than once."

The party got going back at Chinawhite with Axwell of Swedish House Mafia on the decks, stepping in for Mark Ronson, who pulled out following the death of his friend Amy Winehouse on Saturday.
Country singer Keith carried a snoozing Sunday Rose, who will be three in July, who appeared to be while Nicole was charged with carrying the newest member of their family little Faith Margaret.

These pictures are the first sightings of five month old Faith with the rest of the family.
Australian actress, Nicole, 43, was dressed in a pair of olive green trousers a patterned blouse, burgundy jumper and dark jacket.

Singer-songwriter Keith kept things casual in jeans and a T-shirt and donned a baseball cap for the travel.

Both little girls were dressed in white and Sunday Rose wore her hair in two side plaits.Earlier this month Keith was honoured with a star on Nashville’s Music City Walk of Fame and was joined by his wife to celebrate the unveiling of his plaque.

The couple welcomed the newest addition to their family Faith Margaret in December who was born by surrogate.

Speaking about the experience Nicole said: ‘Having given birth and then being there to see my child born in that way, I felt so much love for our surrogate, gestational carrier.’The Academy Award-winning actress also explained that she uses the term ‘gestational carrier’ as opposed to ‘surrogate’.

Speaking to Australia’s 60 minutes Nicole explained: ‘We were trying to be accurate.

The term gestational carrier is used if it’s your biological child and if it isn’t, then you use surrogate. I mean, who knows what it is. But she’s the most wonderful woman to do this for us.’

In a sea of utterly beautiful women wearing spectacular designer dresses, she walked up the red-carpet stairs. Her dress, at the 2011 Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute gala, was by Stella McCartney.

It was a dark-teal number with embroidered silver stars running from the waist to a short train and it was teamed with heels by Sergio Rossi and jewellery by Cartier.

Her name is Madonna and she looked elegant and hot.
But, in an aside to the assembled press, she was reported to have said, "I feel fat in my dress."

Pardon me? You feel what? You feel … fat?

Madonna, a woman whose fitness regimen would frighten a paratrooper, feels fat.

Website US Weekly reported the comment and in a funny way the remark comes as no surprise. Women say this all the time – no matter what size they are.

More Rubenesque ladies, and I say this with some experience, live in a world teeming with judgments about their size.

As a result, some believe what advertising, gossip magazines and Fashion designers favour as the ideal size. They think they are fat.

But then, not every slender woman lives smug in the belief she is slim and magnificent. Some of them say they are fat, too. They put on tiny dresses and swish this way and that but nothing can stop them telling whoever is nearby that there’s a chubster inside the gown waiting to burst out. Women of absolutely every size, from chubby to skinny, stand in front of a mirror every so often (or every day) and say, "I feel fat in my dress."

When Madonna says it at a star-studded gala ball with people such as Giselle Bundchen, Miranda Kerr, Penelope Cruz, Blake Lively and Sarah Jessica Parker walking past in swathes of gorgeous silk, tulle and sequinned satin, the meaning of the word "fat" becomes something else.

It’s a crutch, a term to fall back on when you are not feeling your best. We say it among friends and they say, supportively, "No way. You look fantastic. You are not fat."

Madonna is not fat. Her physique is extraordinary, her hair is golden in the photographers’ flashes and her porcelain skin is glowing with health.

She almost certainly does not have any health problems caused by carrying too much weight. That’s what fat means.

Maybe Madonna felt her dress was too tight. That’s not a comfortable feeling. Maybe there were thinner people at the ball. It’s unlikely the contest to be the slimmest will ever allow that.

It’s a woman’s right to say she feels fat. But when you are astronomically famous, svelte and healthy, it’s an amazing admission, and a peculiar example to other women, to declare it.

If she feels that way it’s mind-boggling. When, we ask in mildly despairing tones, can any woman ever reach the stage where she does not feel fat?

Kate Middleton chose to wear the Cartier “halo” tiara, which was made in 1936 and purchased by the Duke of York (later King George VI) for his wife, Elizabeth’s mother (also Elizabeth). Queen Elizabeth received it as an 18th-birthday present, at which time she was Princess Elizabeth. The delicate headpiece, which is as understated as a headband of diamonds can be, was lent to Kate by the Queen, though there’s a chance she’ll come into one of her own soon: the Queen’s 1981 wedding gift to Diana was the Cambridge Lovers’ Knot Tiara. Diana wore a Spencer-family tiara to her wedding.

Kate’s earrings, custom-made by Robinson Pelham to match her tiara, were a present from her parents. The earrings, with acorn motifs, was inspired by the fresh, new Middleton-family crest. Pelham also designed the more floral earrings worn by the other lady in white—maid of honor Pippa Middleton.

Kate’s wedding ring, which seemed to have given William a bit of difficulty in the slipping on, is a band of Welsh gold by Wartski, which also crafted Welsh-gold wedding bands for Prince Charles and Camilla.

Global brands emphasise cut and clarity, while local jewellers prefer carat to cut and clarity
A floral diamond ring of 0.3 carat that costs Rs 15,000 at a local jeweller would come for Rs 42,000 at a Gitanjali store and perhaps for Rs 45,000 at Tanishq. But if you are looking at international brands like Cartier, Tiffany or Harry Winston, be prepared to pay a few lakhs.

This stark difference in price is despite the fact that 14 out of 15 diamonds sold across the globe are cut and polished in India by nearly a million artisans spread across Surat, Mumbai and Nasari in the western part of the country.

What makes all the difference are the four Cs of diamond grading — clarity, carat, colour and cut. While international brands emphasise on cut and clarity, local jewellers prefer carat to cut and clarity to satiate the demand for this sparkling stone that has been fancied by women for centuries.

Moreover, the diamond jewellery from international houses is entirely handcrafted by artisans who are paid several times more than their Indian counterparts to create a masterpiece, even if it requires six months to develop a single product by just one artisan.

The truth is that India has merely become a sourcing hub for polished diamonds and is far behind in the global pecking order in terms of finished products, primarily because of the absence of innovation in designing that matches global standards. And more importantly, India lacks brands that can make its diamond jewellery glitter with that special sparkle.

If statistics are to be believed, India exported over $28 billion worth of cut and polished diamonds in 2010-11, which is a growth of 54.9 per cent over the preceding financial year, out of the estimated $40 billion global diamond industry. Nearly 47 per cent of India’s polished diamond is exported to the UAE followed by Hong Kong (22 per cent) and the US (11 per cent). The US is the largest consuming market while the UAE and Hong Kong are used as distribution centres for markets in Africa, West Asia and Russia.

However, Antwerp continues to be the largest producer of diamond studded jewellery while Italy is the leading nation for stone-studded jewellery and Turkey shares the distinction of being biggest producer of plain gold jewellery.

With China catching up with India with its cheap labour and advanced technologies, Indian entrepreneurs are waking up to the need of world-class designs and creating a brand for Indian jewellery.

“Our endeavour is to make India a global hub for both gems and jewellery. With expertise in diamond cutting, availability of all types of stones, gold and silver and, above all, a pool of highly skilled manpower, India can transform from a mere sourcing hub for diamonds into a world leader in producing diamond and gold jewellery. There is also a need to create ‘Brand India’ and this would need extensive marketing at our end,” Rajiv Jain, chairman of Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, said.

Gitanjali Group, the diamond jewellery maker with brands like Gili, Asmi and D’Damas, feels that it’s time for India to upgrade its design and technology to continue having an edge over China. “India’s total diamond and jewellery export is $35 billion but this could triple to $100 billion and more if we start exporting diamond jewellery instead of just exporting cut and polished diamonds as we do now. For this, investment in designing, technology and world-class infrastructure is needed,” Mehul Choksi, MD of Gitanjali Group, said.

The company is setting up a shared technology centre at its Hyderabad Special Economic Zone to help manufacturers in the vicinity to avail world-class technology that will be imported from Israel, Switzerland and Italy. The project, which is being set up at an investment of Rs 50 crore, is expected to be operational by the end of the third quarter of 2011. The Indian government, on its part, is investing at least Rs 50 crore this year to set up more jewellery designing institutes in Chennai and Kolkata, over and above the seven institutes that are already operational in Surat, Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and Kolkata through the Export Promotion Council.

Louis Vuitton, the French maker of laminated canvas handbags, is the world’s most valuable luxury brand for the sixth consecutive year, a research group says.

The brand, owned by Paris-based LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, has a value of $US24.3 billion ($22.6 billion), an increase of 23 per cent from 2010, according to Millward Brown Optimor’s 2011 BrandZ study published today. That’s almost as much as the combined values of hermes, gucci and Chanel, which ranked second, third and fourth in this year’s luxury-brand standings.

Vuitton’s value amounts to almost 28 per cent of LVMH’s current market capitalisation. The brand is benefiting from demand for status symbols in developing markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China, and the perception in Europe and the US that its products are exclusive, said Cristiana Pearson, a director at Millward Brown Optimor who led the study.

“As we continue to come out of the recession, people will continue to spend more on luxury, and the BRIC countries don’t look like they’re slowing,” with growth in Brazil and China particularly strong, Pearson said.

Hermes International, in which LVMH holds a 20.2 per cent stake, posted the biggest increase in brand value in the luxury industry with a 41 per cent jump to $US11.9 billion, according to the BrandZ study. Gucci’s value declined 2 per cent to $US7.45 billion, affected by French parent PPR SA’s financial performance, Pearson said. Chanel advanced 23 per cent to $US6.82 billion.

LVMH’s role

Hennessy, Moet & Chandon and Fendi placed seventh, eighth and ninth in the study respectively, with values of $US3.42 billion to $US5 billion, meaning LVMH, the world’s largest luxury-goods maker, owns or has a stake in five of the industry’s 10 most-valuable brands.

LVMH has a lineup of labels “that have very high standards in terms of craftsmanship and that give the impression of very high exclusivity, even in some cases where it may not be so exclusive,” Pearson said.

The Cartier and Rolex watch and jewelry brands owned by Cie. Financiere Richemont ranked fifth and sixth in the luxury-brand ranking, while Burberry replaced Tiffany as No. 10.

Vuitton placed 26th worldwide among 100 companies across 13 industries in the BrandZ study.

Apple, maker of the iPad and the iPhone, is the world’s most valuable brand, with its estimated value surging 84 per cent from a year earlier to $US153 billion, according to Millward Brown Optimor.

The study was based on interviews with consumers as well as analysis of company performance.

It was the moment when millions of television viewers around the world gasped in admiration: Kate Middleton stepping out of the car at Westminster Abbey, giving people the first proper look at her dress, hair and tiara. Not only did the stunning Alexander McQueen dress, designed by Sarah Burton, lead to cheers from the Fashion press and those watching, but so too her decision to wear most of her hair down, and have her veil kept in place by the so called "halo" tiara, lent to her by the Queen.

The piece of Cartier jewellery is too valuable to have an accurate price, but would fetch many millions of pounds if it were ever to be sold.

Now it turns out that her hairdresser practised creating the Duchess of Cambridge’s Style using nothing more valuable than a £6.50 plastic tiara, which he picked up at Claire’s Accessories, a cheap and cheerful jewellery shop, frequented by teenage girls.

In an interview, Richard Ward, whose salon was in charge of styling all of the Middleton family’s hair, admitted the secret to how he and his team worked day after day to get the bride’s hair just right – even without either Miss Middleton or the tiara to practise on.

In the back office of the salon, covering the glass door with paper so no one could peer in, they used a personal assistant as the model and sent out to the high street to pick up the flimsy hairpiece. The £6.50 Claire’s tiara could not be more different from the Cartier version. It is less than an ounce heavy, made in China, and could be snapped in the hand of a three-year-old. The Claire shops are famous for selling a vast array of cheap costume jewellery, glitter, nail polish, false eyelashes and cut-price belts and hats – nearly all of which are aimed at teenage girls out to spend their pocket money.

The "halo" tiara, which was made in 1936 and purchased by the Duke of York, later George VI, for his wife, is an elegant, understated but substantial piece created by the French jewellery house. It features a rolling cascade of scrolls that converge in a central ornament surmounted by a brilliant diamond.

The Queen received it as an 18th-birthday present, and lent it to Miss Middleton for the day. Many critics said it was considerably more elegant than the huge Spencer family tiara worn by Diana, the Princess of Wales on her wedding day.

But the plastic version did the trick and the team were able to magic Miss Middleton’s hair into the demi-chignon style without a hitch. The salon revealed how it avoided a repeat of the 1981 wedding, when Diana, the Princess of Wales was seen having to nervously adjust her tiara as it slipped out of place.

James Pryce, Mr Ward’s colleague, who has been styling the Middleton family’s hair for many years, said: "We came up with a unique concept for securing it. We backcombed the top to create a foundation for the tiara to sit around, then did a tiny plait in the middle and sewed it on. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life."

Mr Ward said that the doing the future Duchess’s hair on the morning of last month’s wedding was a joy, helped only by Mr Ward. "It was just the three of us – no televisions on at all. It was a very special time."

"She was amazing, keeping us calm if anything. And she cared how we were coping constantly giving us confidence. It was fantastic," he told the Sunday Times.

Over the last week, since the wedding, Claire’s Accessories have completely sold out of its range of costume tiaras, which range in price from £5 to £10. In a memo to its staff, the management said that five of its top ten selling items during the last seven days were tiaras.

Opia Hamadi, who works in the Victoria branch of Claire’s said: "It’s been mad. I couldn’t work out why everyone was buying tiaras. But then I saw the pictures of the wedding. I think they are great."

WHEN it comes to Valentine’s Day, jewellery has always been the preferred choice to show your love to that special someone. With that in mind, we’ve picked out some lovely pieces.

Van Cleef & Arpels’ master jewellers created the Nid de Paradis collection especially for Valentine’s Day.

Love and nature have been the twin sources of inspiration for the brand for over a century, and this collection of three pieces – ring, earrings and pendant – reflects the spirit of the maison.

An allegorical element using a diamond resting within a spiral suggests eternal passion and the desire for protection, a romantic theme indeed.

Carrera y Carrera has selected some special pieces inspired by the important and everlasting moments under the theme, “a moment, a treasure”.

Known for its unique and ornate pieces, Carrera y Carrera’s selections include a gorgeous, intricately-carved yellow gold Aqua ring from their Aqua collection. If you prefer diamonds, the Mi Princesa Collection has an array of beautiful diamond rings, such as the Medieval wedding band and Grecoroman ring. For something that will really catch the eye, pick the Alamar ring, of white gold and rose cut diamonds and a Mother-of-Pearl.

And if you want something striking, the Gardenia ring and matching pendant is of yellow gold with smoked quartz and enamel.

Dainty and delicate describes the Baile de Mariposas earrings of white gold and diamonds, with a diamond butterfly resting on mother-of-pearl.

The younger ones or young at heart who prefer something colourful and fun can opt for Juicy Couture’s Love charms, which would make a wonderful gift.

Choose either different coloured bands with single letter charms or gold charms spelling the words “Love” and a heart, while the silver ones come with a diamente cupid’s bow and arrow.

A striking ring to catch the eye, the Lollipop from Kate Spade.

For something more intimate, try Juicy couture undies, which come packaged in a diamond case.

● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Kate Spade also has a colourful and fun collection. The Lollie ring will brighten up any outfit with its striking pink stone and the colourful diamente against yellow gold. The Tutti Frutti necklace is aptly named as it is made of little coloured squares attached to a gold chain. And if you’re going for minimalism, select the Idiom bangles in gold or silver with the words “hand-in-hand” running around the bangle.

If jewellery is too cliche, how about shoes? Tod’s Marlin Hyannisport is the perfect shoe for men and women. You can even have his and her matching shoes in different colours.

The Tod’s Marlin Hyannisport for men to match the women’s shoes.

● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

And what’s Valentine’s Day without a bag? The Marcello de Cartier hobo bag is the latest incarnation from the very popular Marcello de Cartier range. This soft leather bag comes in shades of bronze, ebony, black and tone-on-tone contrasts with python or water-snake skin.

● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Not sure what to get the special man in your life? Writing instruments are always a good choice, after all, you know they’ll always use it.

Davidoff believes that all stories can be told or written, and their Davidoff Velero Collection is specially created for men and women who live their passions. The beautiful classic pens will certainly like true love, stand the test of time.

Tuscany in a fragrance from Annick Goutal Les Nuits d”Hadrien for men.

● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Also for men, romance is in the air, as is Annick Goutal’s Les Nuits d’Hadrien. Think starry skies, a Tuscan Garden and the sensual scent of Tuscany by night.
